چکیده
The persistent educational challenges that fractions pose call for developing novel instructional methods to better prepare students fraction learning. Here, we examined the effects of a 24-session, Cuisenaire rod intervention on building block symbolic knowledge, continuous and discrete non-symbolic proportional reasoning, in children who have yet receive instruction. Participants were 34 second-graders attended (intervention group) 15 did not participate any sessions (control group). As attendance at was irregular (median = 15.6 sessions, range 1–24), specifically effect number completed their reasoning. Our results showed larger increased ability compare proportions. However, contrary our expectations, they also decreased misleading discretized In contrast, Control group show change performance. These provide further evidence malleability reasoning highlight rigidity counting knowledge interference

متن کاملNeural Sub-Symbolic Reasoning
The sub-symbolical representation often corresponds to a pattern that mirrors the way the biological sense organs describe the world. Sparse binary vectors can describe sub-symbolic representation, which can be efficiently stored in associative memories. According to the production system theory, we can define a geometrically based problemsolving model as a production system operating on sub-sy...
متن کاملRepresenting Symbolic Reasoning
Introspection is a fundamental component of how we as humans reason, learn, and adapt. However, many existing computer reasoning systems exclude the possibility of introspection because their design does not allow a representation of their own reasoning procedures as data. Using a model of reasoning based on observable effect it is possible to test the abilitly of any given data structure to re...
متن کاملProportional Reasoning in a Boolean Setting
Extrapolations are often based on parallels made between two situations that are thus compared. Comparative information may pertain to similarities as well as to dissimilarities. Analogical proportions, i.e., statements of the form “A is to B as C is to D”, provide a natural way for stating such a parallel. In the Boolean setting, logical proportions, a recently introduced notion that generaliz...
متن کاملBRAINN: A Connectionist Approach to Symbolic Reasoning
Hybrid connectionist symbolic systems have been the subject of much recent research in AI. By focusing on the implementation of high-level human cognitive processes (e.g., rule-based inference) on low-level, brain-like structures (e.g., neural networks), hybrid systems inherit both the efficiency of connectionism and the comprehensibility of symbolism. This paper presents the Basic Reasoning Ap...
